Edging Its Way Forward: The 2023 Ford Edge

The Edge is coming back. Despite any rumors you’ve heard to the contrary, there will be a 2023 Ford Edge. Ford has not yet released much information, but we can certainly make some logical guesses about what to expect. This spunky mid-size SUV is too good to take off the market, and we’re glad it’s sticking around. While we don’t have all of the official information, we’ve put together this 2023 Ford Edge Buyers guide based on what we know and on projections from previous model years.

Compact SUVs may not get the most media attention, but that doesn’t mean they don’t get the most factory and manufacturer attention. So, with all of this in mind, let’s look at our current and previous Ford Edge models and see what we might learn about what’s coming in 2023.

A Look at the Ford Edge

To those who may not be familiar, this is an excellent question and a great place to start. The Edge is a compact, five-seat SUV that first hit the market in 2007, so it is, in the grand scheme of things, a relatively young vehicle, being only 15 years old. Because of its relatively young age, the Edge focuses on high-end luxury features. It’s not a traditional commuter vehicle due to its SUV architecture, but the combination of sportiness and girth that comes with a crossover makes it the perfect vehicle for young professionals and new families.

It’s got the valuable interior space for family life, with room for the kids and any other belongings you need, but still offers the compact sportiness of a commuter vehicle, like something you could pick up colleagues in for a business outing. However, the Edge seems to be catering to a new kind of driver, especially with its ST trim, but more on that later. First, let’s get a better idea of the Edge’s trim options.

An Impressive Array of Trims for Every Type of Driver

The 2022 Edge offers five trim levels (The SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, and ST). The SE serves as the base-level trim, focusing on practicality over style, and you can work your way up the ladder to the Titanium, the premiere luxury trim. The Titanium offers higher-end features like a heated steering wheel, sportier color schemes, and many other amenities to maximize your comfort. One of the premiere features that will excite any audiophile is the 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system that includes a subwoofer. Most cars don’t have subwoofers, so you know you’re in for the ride of a lifetime when you have that bass pumping through your body, providing a much more immersive sound experience than any traditional car speakers.

You’ll notice that we mentioned the ST trim but didn’t work our way up to it. It is the premier trim, but its focus differs from the Titanium. While the Titanium trim is focused on luxury and convenience features, the ST trim is performance-oriented. So, with the ST trim, you’ll find the highest-level engine, which is the 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost Turbo engine. Anytime you see the word EcoBoost in an engine name, there’s a reason for intrigue. This engine offers a light, compact graphite iron engine block with aluminum heads, meaning it’s nice and light, keeping things small and compact, hence the Eco part of EcoBoost.

As for the “Boost” part of EcoBoost, this little monster can achieve up to 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Now, if you’re a car buff and think those specs don’t really reach the highest heights of the Mustang, you are correct. Keep in mind that the Edge is not the Mustang, nor is it even attempting to be a sports car. It’s a compact SUV with the style of a sports car, and specs like that are out of this world for a compact SUV.

While enjoying these excellent specs, the ST trim also offers the ST Performance Brake Package. With this package come some very special features that serve practical purposes and give the Edge the fiercest styling of any trims. 21-inch premium gloss black-painted aluminum wheels, front and rear vented disc brakes, special front rotors, and Colorado Red-painted brake calipers make for a passionate, speedy look that catches the eye and communicates exactly what the Edge ST is all about.

On the more practical, less style-oriented side, the package also includes a brushless radiator cooling fan, performance brake pads, and vented brake shields. The ST Performance Brake Package doesn’t sound like it would include all that much, but as you can see, it includes more than you could expect. Braking is a huge part of optimizing performance, and this package will help optimize performance thanks to its detail-oriented features.

One more noteworthy element of the ST is its interior, which gets you into the high-performance, racecar mood with ST-bolstered captain’s chairs, including City Silver stitching and an embossed ST logo. You’ll never forget which trim you’re driving with this feature, which communicates the vehicle’s capability to drivers and riders. So, that’s an overview of where the Edge stands as of right now, but what do we know about the 2023 model?

A Look at the 2023 Ford Edge

Ford has begun taking pre-orders for the vehicle but still has not shared much detail about it. The ST trim will gain a new Interior Appearance package, which will likely stick with the ST trim’s fierce aesthetic by adding sharper color options, leather-trimmed seats, and racecar-like design cues. What is becoming increasingly clear is that the Edge is opening the door for those looking to have a vehicle that is useful not only for the combination of domestic and professional use but for the combination of domestic and athletic use.

Most compact SUVs don’t veer towards race car-like performance and design features. Some compact SUVs have a “sporty” trim and maybe a few performance features to shake up the daily drive, but few compact SUVs lean as directly into performance driving as the Edge. If this does indeed continue with this new Interior Appearance Package in 2023, the Edge will be making progress not only in the addition of a new package but potentially in the addition of a new target market as well. So, whether you’re looking to drive the kids to soccer practice, drive a colleague to lunch, or drive yourself to the racetrack, the Edge can certainly accommodate. Alright, maybe not the literal racetrack…but something close to it.

Edging Its Way In

The Edge is, in some ways, an experimental vehicle. Compact utility vehicles, or CUVs, like the Edge, arguably became prominent in the 1990s, meaning brands are still finding ways to innovate these uniquely-positioned SUVs. The Edge has firmly established itself as a great vehicle for young families, young professionals, and everything else we’ve already established. The Edge appears to be edging its way into a new market that caters to those with a more adventurous, high-speed flare, and we excitedly welcome this new direction.

Whether it’s in the performance capability that comes with the ST’s EcoBoost engine and Performance Brake Package or even just the fiercer aesthetics of the trim, the Edge is certainly catering to an audience beyond the normal compact SUV driver.
