Ford’s Entry Into the EV Market: The Mustang Mach-E

After years of planning, designing, and developing, Ford has finally unveiled its first-ever fully-electric SUV, and it’s a Mustang! The upcoming 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is a groundbreaker for the American automaker. Serving as Ford’s entry into the EV market, this model is full of very pleasant surprises. Why a Mustang?

The Ford Mustang is arguably one of the most recognizable vehicles on the market. It has withstood the test of time, become a household name, and is still a best-seller. So, why would Ford choose to release its first-ever fully EV model in the form of this American icon? Because they can.

The engineers at Ford originally considered creating an EV hatchback, but that sounded really boring. The unveiling of a typical hatchback EV would have been white-noise at this point. With so many other similar vehicles available, the team at Ford wanted theirs to stand out. So, they decided to transform the Mustang into an SUV and add a fully-electric powertrain to it.

How Much Power Are We Talking About?

If you are thinking that electric vehicles are weak, you’re right. For the most part, EVs are underpowered, and that’s why some people aren’t interested in buying one.

However, Ford knew that if they were going to create an EV Mustang, they needed to do it justice. That’s why they developed an insanely powerful system that estimated to generate 332 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque. If you get a GT or GT Performance Edition, those performance numbers are expected to grow to 459 hp and a whopping 612 lb-ft of torque. We bet you never thought you’d see those numbers associated with an EV.

The 2021 Mustang Mach-E uses one of two batteries as power sources. The standard one has 288 cells and gives off 75.7 kWh. The extended-range version provides a generous 98.8 kWh and contains 376 cells. This lithium-ion battery pack has a driving range of up to 300 miles, which is very good for an EV.

What About Acceleration?

The Mustang gained rapid popularity for its ability to smoke the competition. Leaving your friends in the dust is still an option with the Mach-E. In fact, this EV model offers exceptional acceleration.

In track tests, the GT Performance Edition sailed from zero to 60 mph in 3 seconds flat. How’s that for an environmentally-friendly SUV? Even the non-GT model performed well on the track by accelerating up to 60 mph in an average of 4.3 seconds.

It manages this quick acceleration time due to its aerodynamics. This sleek ride cuts through the air like a hot knife through butter. The A-pillars have been pushed back, the wheels have been repositioned, and the nose has been raised slightly. It uses a low center of gravity and a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution to take on curves smoothly. You won’t have to worry about losing control of the vehicle in a sharp corner.

How Much Space Does It Have?

The 2021 Mustang Mach-E can carry five passengers like all compact SUVs. It also offers 29 cubic feet of cargo room in the back with all five seats in use. That’s a lot of room for an EV.

Most hybrid or electric models have less storage space due to the rear-mounted battery packs. These can be very large and take up a lot of space. However, Ford designers considered this when they were drafting this spectacular ride. You can fold down the back row of seating to gain access to 60 cubic feet of space. That’s plenty of room for traveling solo or moving to a new place.

There is one more storage surprise on the Mach-E, the five cubic foot front compartment. Located where the engine would traditionally sit, this extra cargo space offers room for a carry-on bag or suitcase. Ford is not planning to have it carpeted, so you can throw your muddy boots in there after a day of hiking or exploring the outdoors. This compartment can be easily cleaned with the help of a water hose. You won’t have to worry about soaking the carpet (because there isn’t any) or getting the inside of the vehicle dirty.

Does It Come with Any New Features?

The new Mustang Mach-E is loaded with the coolest new features on the market. From entertainment to comfort to convenience, you’ll be hard-pressed to find something you don’t love about it.

If you are a fan of Ford, you probably already know about the Co-Pilot360 system. This suite of safety features is currently included in all-new Ford models. Now, the Mach-E will be taking that a step further. It has three safety packages that can be added. First is the Co-Pilot360 2.0 suite that includes BLIS with cross-traffic alert, a reverse sensing system, automatic high beams, reverse brake assist, post-collision braking, pre-collision assist with automatic braking, a rearview camera, and a handy lane-keeping system.

Up next is the Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0, which adds other advanced features like intelligent adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and a navigation system. Finally, the Co-Pilot360 Technology suite includes safety elements like a 360-degree camera system and active park assist 2.0. All of these highlighted operations work together to help prevent accidents on the road.

As for infotainment, the Mustang Mach-E is supposed to feature a giant 15.5-inch touchscreen display, Ford’s most advanced infotainment interface, to date. Many are referring to it as Sync 4, but its official name has yet to be released. It uses Bluetooth for hands-free calling and seamless audio integration, but it goes even further than that. This intuitive system learns your driving habits and presents you with shortcuts. Instead of spending time searching for something that you typically use, the system will give you the option to select it at the bottom of the screen.

For audiophiles, included is a premium 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen system. Featuring a subwoofer, a soundbar, surround sound, dynamic sound tuning, and adaptive volume, you can listen to your favorite songs through this studio-quality audio system.

Another nifty feature is the E-latch system. The Mustang Mach-E doesn’t have any door handles. Instead, the vehicle recognizes you as you approach. A button will light up that you can press to open the doors. Similarly, it also recognizes when you walk away from the vehicle, and it will then lock itself. You can also use your smartphone device as a key by activating FordPass. This app can open/close windows, lock/unlock doors, open the liftgate if your hands are full, locate the vehicle if you forgot where you parked, and even activate the remote start feature.

Lastly, one of our personal favorites is the panoramic fixed glass roof. This luxurious add-on is such a wonderful element to include. It is covered with a special coating that keeps the vehicle warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
