Behind the Wheel of the New Ford Explorer

With the 2025 model, the Ford Explorer is offered in two versions: Very Nice and Very Fast. Technically, they’re both very nice, but only one of them is very fast.

The standard engine for most of the lineup is a 2.3L EcoBoost that’s good for 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. These are not small numbers, even for a three-row SUV. Rear-wheel-drive is standard, as is a 10-speed automatic transmission, which has been recalibrated for the 2025 model year.

Platinum drivers also have the option of swapping out their 2.3L engine for the 3.0L.
