How the F-150 Got Where It Is Today

The F-150 didn’t get to where it is currently overnight. The history surrounding the F-150 goes far beyond many of its competitors, and to the American people, the F-Series of pickup trucks is as American as Apple Pie. The F-Series pickup truck launched in the late-1940s, but its DNA goes further than that. In fact, you can trace the beginnings of the F-150 back to the Model TT in 1917.

Ford was an invaluable asset for the USA during the early to mid-1900s––not only because of their increasing success but because Ford was one of the manufacturers who assisted the US Military during World War II. For example, Ford built a production plant exclusively for the US Military in 1942, and its production line began creating more than land vehicles––it also produced boats and airplanes.

The F-150, however, is the result of the F-Series having evolved over the past eighty years. The F-Series launched when pickup trucks were commonly owned by those who needed them for hard work, such as farmers. Hobbyism wasn’t as much of an everyday sight with pickup trucks as they are now. The F-Series deviated from the design philosophy of Ford’s other offerings at the time, and for the driver who needed a vehicle with performance in mind first and foremost, the F-Series was it.

The F-Series was available in models ranging from the ‘F-1’ to the ‘F-8,’ and it wasn’t until the second generation the F-100 launched. The F-100 remained the namesake until the sixth-generation F-Series truck in the early 1970s when the F-150 moniker came to be around thirty years after the launch of the original F-Series pickup truck. Over the years, the F-150 grew in strength and capabilities while its fanbase and sales numbers skyrocketed. 2022 F-150 & F-150 Lightning

The 2022 F-150 and F-150 Lightning are here to break some barriers. More specifically, the F-150 Lightning marks a historic milestone for the titular manufacturer: a fully-electric variant of the best-selling vehicle in America. People saw this move coming from a mile away, and the results have been impressive in many facets. Meanwhile, the regular F-150 continues to impress drivers and critics alike with its incredible versatility, capabilities, and everything else under the sun.

The most important aspect of a pickup truck is its raw performance. The F-150 is available with a handful of powertrain configurations––or five, more specifically. Each 2022 F-150 engine pairs nicely with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which is the base configuration. The base engine is a 3.3L V6 that creates 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque with a max towing capacity of 8,200 lbs. Moving up the list is a turbocharged 2.7L V6 engine with a much improved 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, increasing its towing capacity to 10,100 lbs.

Next is the venerable 5.0L V8 engine famously dubbed the “Coyote.” With the 2022 F-150, the Coyote engine outputs 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, and the maximum towing capacity increases to 13,000 lbs. If you want the best available towing for your F-150, you’ll need the turbocharged 3.5L V6 engine, outputting 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque and an impressive maximum towing capacity of 14,000 lbs. Lastly, the turbocharged 3.5L V6 hybrid engine creates 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque with a maximum towing capacity of 12,700 lbs. However, the hybrid model isn’t as impactful since the release of the F-150 Lightning.

Speaking of the F-150 Lightning, the appeal is a fully electric powertrain in a full-size pickup. In what many considered impossible, Ford has created a pickup truck running off dual electric motors that output 452 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque in its base configuration. The base powertrain has a 98 kWh battery and can travel up to 230 miles on a full charge and tow up to 7,700 lbs of cargo. Upgrading your F-150 Lightning to the 131 kWh battery will increase the performance significantly to 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque with a travel range of up to 320 miles and a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 lbs.
