We know that buying a new truck is never easy, especially if you’re looking for one that’s going to fit into whatever line of work you’re doing. Despite all the off-roading, boat hauling, and enjoyable nature of today’s pickup trucks, there are still those out there who need a truck for one purpose: work. And no truck works better or harder than the 2022 Ford Super Duty. Ask any Super Duty owner, and they’ll tell you. If you’re getting ready to pay The Faricy Boys Ford, your 2022 Ford Super Duty dealer, a visit, we’re going to take this opportunity to run you through the ins and outs of the Blue Oval’s workhorse.

There are three different levels of the 2022 Super Duty. There’s the F-250, F-350, and F-450. We’ll explain what those numbers mean, take you on a tour of the truck’s capability as far as towing, give you a rundown of your engine options, and provide a brief glimpse at the many different trim levels offered for the Super Duty. Let’s get started.

Numbers = Payload

The whole concept behind pinning a number to a truck is to show you, right off the bat, how much it can handle. Pickup trucks are split into categories: compact, midsize, and full-size. Once you reach full-size trucks, the numbers come into play. You have half-ton (F-150), three-quarter-ton (F-250), and one-ton (F-350 and F-450). Are things beginning to make sense?

The number in the name of the truck originally referred to how much payload the truck could take. For instance, a half-ton pickup was rated to carry a payload of up to 1,000 lbs. However, the maximum payloads of modern trucks are far higher than that. A 2022 F-350 can move up to 7,850 lbs––almost four tons––despite being referred to as a one-ton truck, while the 2022 F-250 has a maximum payload rating of 4,260 lbs.

The F-450 actually has a slightly lower payload rating than the F-350. However, if you’re carrying or towing an awful lot of equipment or livestock, the F-450 may be the way to go. It’s your preference, as the buyer, to decide which Super Duty will serve your needs best. The best-selling Super Dutys are the F-250 and F-350 specifically because they are more adaptable to life outside the realm of work. The F-450, with its dually rear wheels and enormous stature, looks more at home on a ranch than on the streets of Canon City. Regardless, understanding the number behind your truck’s name is key to discovering which one is right for you.

Engine Options

We’ll talk about engine options next. You have three engines to choose from when it comes to outfitting your 2022 Ford Super Duty: a 6.2L V8, a 7.3L V8, and a 6.7L V8 Turbo Diesel.

We’ll begin at the beginning. 6.2L V8. This is the baby of the trio and is the standard engine on F-250 and F-350 models. This is not to say the engine is not capable; it certainly is. It’s engineered to provide long-term reliability through the use of a cast-iron block and single overhead cam valves. The power figures are 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque.

Next, we have the 7.3L V8, which is designed with commercial-grade durability and efficiency. It’s literally built to haul and carry enormous amounts of payload day after day, week after week. The V8 uses pushrods designed to provide low-end torque for maximum hauling capacity. The durability of the engine comes from its cast-iron block and forged steel crankshaft. All this to say is that your power output looks like 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque.

Finally, we have the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel. This engine features a 36,000 psi fuel injection system to optimize the combustions by atomizing the fuel. The turbocharger is electrically actuated to improve throttle response and efficiency by providing maximum horsepower at the lowest RPM: 475 hp at 2,600 RPM. The torque is no joke either, with 1,050 lb-ft at 1,600 RPM. This engine provides you with an insane amount of power, helping you haul anything from fifth-wheel trailers to that stubborn stump that’s mocked you for too long.

On all Super Duties, besides the F-250 with the 6.2L V8, the transmission is a TorqShift 10-speed automatic. This transmission, paired with the heavy-duty engines, provides maximum performance through optimized drive ratios and gear shifting. There are also five selectable drive modes that can be coupled with this transmission: Normal, Slippery, Tow/Haul, Eco, and Deep Sand/Snow––that last mode comes in handy here in Colorado. The transmission for the base F-250 with the 6.2L V8 is a TorqShift-G 6-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift. SelectShift helps improve gearing and has a Progressive Range Select, allowing for overdrive lockout and full manual operation.

Towing Capability

Towing is an important aspect of the 2022 Super Duty, whether it’s a gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer carrying everything from bricks to horses to heavy equipment. There is a full list of numbers across the Super Duty lineup on exactly what transmission and engine selection you’ll need to get the most out of your pickup truck. We’re not going to get too far into the nitty-gritty of all that, but we are going to give you a basic idea of the maximum towing capacity for the F-250, F-350, and F-450.

  • The 2022 F-250 has a maximum towing capacity of 22,800 lbs.
  • The 2022 F-350 has a maximum towing capacity of 35,750 lbs.
  • The 2022 F-450 has a maximum towing capacity of 37,000 lbs.

For all three models, the highest towing capacity is made possible with the 6.7L Power Stroke engine. If you want a gasoline engine, then the 7.3L V8 will provide noticeably higher tow ratings than the base 6.2L V8.

Trim Levels

Now we’re going to take a quick look at the six trim levels for the Super Duty: the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.

As any Ford buyer knows, the XL and XLT are virtually the same truck, but the XLT sees a bump in price owing to the added options you can get, such as a moonroof, power seats, and updated safety features. As for the Lariat, features include updated color schemes, Baja leather seats, and a 10-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system.

The King Ranch also comes with Ford SYNC 4 software, plus special Kingsville antique effect leather interior, and the ultimate trailer tow camera system with Pro Trailer Backup Assist. The Platinum gets you special badging and multiple leather color options, including Dark Marsala, as well as Adaptive Cruise Control. Finally, on the Limited, you’re looking at an Admiral Blue and Light Slate leather interior with a Miko suede headliner.

Time to Take a Test Drive

So, there you have it, a decently comprehensive guide to what we feel are the most important elements to take into consideration when purchasing a 2022 Ford Super Duty. Again, bear in mind the kind of work you’re planning on doing because, at their core, all three levels of the Super Duty are work trucks and should be respected as such. There are far more statistics and specifications we could go into, but we suggest paying us a visit to find out more in person. We’ll even set you up with a test drive of one of the big ones.
